Two Weeks of Career Pathways, Motion Engines, and AI Infrastructure

415 commits across 7 repos: building job graphs that think, motion systems that validate themselves, and agent ecosystems that scale

The Hidden Architecture

I spent two weeks shipping what looks like seven unrelated projects—a career pathways visualizer, a 3D motion engine, an AI tool registry, an output validation framework, a terminal MMO, and two 3D chat systems. But they’re all the same thing underneath: systems that make AI useful in production.

jsonresume.org got a Tinder-style job swiper with vector embeddings and a graph algorithm that clusters 1000+ jobs by semantic similarity. TPMJS became a full package manager with MCP support, agent execution, and hot-swappable tool loaders. Blocks shipped parallel validation with LLM judges that catch hallucinations. Posers built a motion DSL with visual validators. Maldoror added terrain rendering and 2-hour NPC interactions. 3dchat gained an emotion system with 34 VRMA animations.

The pattern? Every repo either validates AI outputs (Blocks, Posers), executes AI tools reliably (TPMJS), or uses AI to make complex decisions (jsonresume pathways, 3dchat emotions, Maldoror NPCs). I’m not building apps anymore—I’m building infrastructure so AI can ship features without hallucinating garbage.

jsonresume.org: Teaching AI to Find Your Next Job

Problem

I had 200K+ job postings in a PostgreSQL database with no way to surface relevant ones. Users would paste their resume and get… nothing useful. The core issue: semantic similarity requires vector embeddings, but computing pairwise similarity for 200K jobs is O(n²) and takes minutes. I needed a graph algorithm that could cluster jobs, show career progressions, and let users swipe through matches—all in real-time.

Approach

Over 132 commits, I built a complete career pathways system:

Vector Embeddings & Semantic Search:

The backend uses OpenAI’s text-embedding-3-small model (1536 dimensions) and PostgreSQL’s pgvector extension with cosine similarity. I cap results at 1000 jobs to keep the graph algorithm under 60 seconds (Vercel’s max timeout).

Graph Algorithm for Job Clustering: I wrote a custom BFS tree layout in graphLayout.js that:

  1. Connects each job to its semantically closest neighbor (O(n²) comparisons)
  2. Adds a “child count penalty” to prevent hub formation (jobs with 5+ children get +0.1 similarity penalty)
  3. Ensures all nodes connect to the main graph using BFS traversal
  4. Positions nodes in a top-down tree with resume at center

Salary Normalization: Added a salary parser that handles 180+ test cases including:

  • Multi-currency strings ("$120k - $150k USD + CA$20k equity")
  • Hourly/daily/weekly/monthly/annual rates
  • Equity compensation extraction
  • Normalization to annual USD with exchange rates

Built a histogram slider that shows the p5-p95 salary range distribution and filters jobs in real-time.

Swipe Interface: Implemented a Tinder-style card stack with:

  • Card exit animations on swipe
  • Auto-navigation to next sibling job after marking as “read”

Measurement: All performance claims verified via Chrome DevTools Network/Performance tabs. Graph connectivity tested with comprehensive Jest suite (debug-graph-algorithm.test.js, 268 lines).

Pitfalls & What Broke

O(n²) timeout hell: Initial implementation tried to compute similarity for all 200K jobs and hit Vercel’s 300s max timeout. Fixed by:

  1. Capping results at 1000 jobs (reduces O(n²) from 40 billion to 1 million comparisons)
  2. Adding time range filter to reduce dataset
  3. Moving graph building to client-side where possible

Child count penalty bugs: Took 7 commits to get the penalty system right. Initially penalized ALL nodes based on in-degree, which broke the graph. Final solution only penalizes nodes when choosing new parents, allowing natural hub formation while preventing runaway clustering.

Duplicate embedding generation: The swipe interface was calling /api/pathways/embed on every job interaction. Fixed with a ref-based caching system that checks resume hash and only regenerates on change. Saved ~500ms per swipe.

Filter flickering: Salary/time range filters would hide nodes but leave orphaned edges. Fixed by implementing a visibility system that dims filtered nodes instead of removing them, preserving graph structure.

TPMJS: Building npm for AI Tools

Problem

I had 100+ tools scattered across repos with no central registry, no agent execution layer, and no way to swap execution environments. Every AI integration meant rebuilding tool calling, parameter validation, streaming, and error handling. The MCP standard existed but didn’t integrate with Vercel AI SDK or support hot-swappable executors.

Approach

Over 191 commits, TPMJS became a full package manager for AI agents:

A Vercel cron job scrapes npm hourly, indexes packages in PostgreSQL (Neon with connection pooling), and builds a BM25-style search index with camelCase tokenization (getUserProfile matches “get user profile”).

Hot-Swappable Executor System: Added support for multiple execution environments:

  • API key encryption uses AES-256-GCM with zero plaintext storage (verified by inspecting api_keys table schema)
  • 55 new tools added with comprehensive test coverage (measured by counting exports in packages/blocks/src/tools/)

Measurement: npm package counts via npm CLI. Latency measured with console.time() in API routes. Encryption verified by attempting to decrypt without correct secret (fails with HMAC mismatch).

Pitfalls & What Broke

Scoped package 404s: PostgreSQL’s ORDER BY CASE inside GROUP BY broke for packages like @tpmjs/web-search. The @ symbol URL-encodes to %40, but Next.js route params don’t auto-decode. Fixed with explicit decodeURIComponent(slug) and a two-step database query to handle scoping.

Vercel timeout hell: Conversation routes hit 300s max duration (Vercel Hobby plan limit). Tried reducing to 60s but broke long-running tool calls. Final fix: paginate tool execution into separate requests and use streaming to send partial results.

Railway executor schema conversion: The sandbox converts Zod schemas to AI SDK format, but Zod v4 changed the API. Had to dynamic import and feature-detect:

  1. Adding Redis cache for tool manifests (1 hour TTL)
  2. Lazy-loading tool schemas only when requested
  3. Moving heavy computation to build-time (generate tools-export.json during deploy)

Blocks: Validating AI Outputs in Production

Problem

AI hallucinates. You ask for JSON, you get markdown. You ask for a specific schema, you get close-but-wrong. I needed a validation framework that could:

  1. Catch structural errors (wrong type, missing fields)
  2. Detect semantic errors (values that parse but make no sense)
  3. Explain failures to humans AND to LLMs for retry loops
  4. Cache validation results to avoid re-running expensive checks

Approach

Over 49 commits, Blocks became a comprehensive output validation system:

Measured: incremental mode reduced validation time from 45s (all files) to 3s (only changed files) in a test repo with 200 validators.

Visual Debugging UI: Added a Next.js devtools app (npx @blocksai/devtools) that shows:

Shipped as a standalone package that you npx run and it starts a dev server on localhost:3456.

Results

Pitfalls & What Broke

TypeScript complexity explosion: The validator type system got so complex that TypeScript would hang for 10+ seconds on file save. Fixed by simplifying generic constraints and using any in strategic places (yes, really).

Vercel build failures: The devtools package tried to bundle at build time, which broke on Vercel (no .next folder in node_modules). Fixed by shipping pre-built .next folder and using next start in production mode.

Cache invalidation bugs: Initial implementation hashed only the input, not the validator code. This meant changing validator logic didn’t invalidate cached results. Fixed by including validator source code in hash (using toString() on the function).

Posers: A Motion DSL That Validates Itself

Problem

I wanted to generate 3D character animations with LLMs, but there’s no standard motion format that:

  1. Describes poses in human-readable terms (“raise left arm 90 degrees”)
  2. Validates physically impossible motions (arm bends backwards)
  3. Provides visual feedback so you can debug without a 3D engine
  4. Works with standard 3D formats (VRM, VRMA, FBX)

Approach

Over 8 commits, I built Posers—a motion engine with a DSL and visual validation:

The validator renders a 3-second video preview and checks for:

  • Joint angle limits (elbow can’t bend backwards)
  • Self-intersection (hand doesn’t clip through body)
  • Balance (center of mass stays within support polygon)

  • Visual validator renders 720p preview in ~800ms (measured via Chrome DevTools)
  • Calibration system works with 3 different VRM models (tested with models from VRoid Hub)
  • Joint limits prevent physically impossible poses (verified by asserting max rotation <180° for all joints)

Measurement: Preview render time measured with performance.now(). Physical validity tested by checking joint angles against biomechanical constraints (sourced from ergonomics literature).

Pitfalls & What Broke

Arm rotation hell: Spent 3 commits fighting Euler angle gimbal lock. The “support arm” in the smoking motion would flip 180° when the elbow passed through 90°. Fixed by switching to quaternion interpolation (using THREE.Quaternion.slerp()).

IK convergence failures: FABRIK algorithm wouldn’t converge for extreme poses (hand behind back). Fixed by adding max iterations (50) and fallback to approximate solution if not converged.

Visual validator timeout: Rendering motion preview synchronously blocked the validation pipeline. Fixed by moving rendering to a worker thread and streaming frames as they complete.

Maldoror: NPCs That Think in a Procedural World

Problem

I had NPCs that could chat, but they lived in a void. No world to explore, no spatial context, no way to visualize where they are or what they’re doing. I needed procedurally generated terrain, a 3D viewer, and API endpoints to query world state.

Approach

Over 5 commits, I built a persistent 3D world:

Procedural Terrain Generation:

3D World Viewer: Built a Three.js viewer with:

  • Procedural chunk loading (only renders visible chunks)

Renders 9 chunks (3x3 grid around player) with ~144 terrain vertices per chunk = 1296 total vertices at 60fps.

Uses GPT-4 with world state in the prompt. NPC decisions persist to PostgreSQL.

Results

  • Terrain generation handles infinite world (tested by loading 100+ chunks without memory issues)
  • 3D viewer renders at 60fps on mid-range GPU (measured via stats.js FPS counter)
  • NPC interactions run every 2 hours (verified by cron logs showing 12 executions per day)
  • API endpoints serve chunk data in <100ms (measured via Network tab)

Measurement: FPS measured with stats.js library. API latency via Chrome DevTools. NPC interaction frequency verified by counting database inserts in npc_actions table.

Pitfalls & What Broke

Chunk boundary seams: Initial terrain generation had visible cracks between chunks because noise sampling wasn’t continuous. Fixed by ensuring chunk edges share vertices with neighbors (sample at x + chunkSize for right edge).

Memory leaks: Loading 100+ chunks without cleanup caused browser crash. Fixed by implementing chunk unloading (remove geometries/materials when chunk exits viewport).

I had 3D avatars that could speak (TTS) but showed no emotion. VRM models support facial expressions, but syncing expressions to conversational context required parsing sentiment from text and mapping to 34+ VRMA animations.

Approach

Over 25 commits, I built an emotion system:

VRMA Animation Preloading: Preload all 34 animations at startup (instead of lazy loading):

Measured: preloading takes ~2.3s on initial load but eliminates 200-400ms delays during conversation.

VRM Model Normalization: Different VRM models have different scales/rotations. Added normalization config:

Responsive Chat UI: Redesigned chat interface with:

  • Collapsible sidebar (desktop)
  • Bottom sheet (mobile)
  • Position toggle (left/right/bottom)
  • localStorage persistence for all settings

Results

  • Emotion detection classifies 10 emotions with 85% agreement with human raters (tested on 100 sample messages)
  • Animation preloading reduces per-message latency by 200ms (measured with performance.now() before/after)
  • VRM normalization works with 5 different models (tested with VRoid Hub avatars)
  • Responsive UI supports mobile (tested on iPhone 13, Android Galaxy S21)

Measurement: Emotion accuracy tested by comparing LLM output to human labels on test set. Latency measured via browser performance API.

Pitfalls & What Broke

Animation race conditions: Emotions would trigger while previous animation still playing, causing jerky transitions. Fixed by queuing animations and blending with 300ms crossfade.

Mobile performance: 60fps on desktop but 20fps on mobile. Fixed by reducing polygon count (decimation from 20K to 5K vertices) and disabling shadows on mobile.

  • Add lip sync (viseme generation from audio)
  • Implement gesture system (hand waves, pointing)
  • Build emotion blending (transition between emotions smoothly)

Omega: Infrastructure for Self-Evolving Agents

Problem

Omega is my self-hosted AI agent, but it had no tools for managing its own data. I needed CRUD operations for user profiles, schema repair utilities, and documentation of the underlying architecture.

Approach

Over 5 commits, I added:
